Backsafely has helped to pioneer many new products all designed to make our operating environments safer but we strive to remove some of the absurdity's involved, we don't believe that the “tick the box” safety feature gives adequate performance or protection that you should expect.
TowCam
The director has been involved in heavy machinery and heavy haulage for over 17 years and one of the key reasons he started the company was to cut out the rubbish and provide sensible clear advice that would offer benefits to the operator and ultimately safety and security for everyone.
The first thing to decide is how many cameras do you need. Articulated units benefit from trailer mounted rear views, a load view camera and a left hand side view cameras, complying with the new EEC vision directive
2003/97/ECdue in force by March 09.
Rear View
Side View
Load View
Side and flat load cameras have no physical connection to the trailer. Side cameras offer excellent visibility of the road when moving forward and in reverse manoeuvres because the operator can see the rear of the trailer when his mirror is only showing the side of the trailer.
Load cameras are fitted to the top of the cab and allow the load to be observed at all times. Especially helpful for large machinery or irregular load movements.
We should point out that nobody takes more pride in its installation work than we do. Poor practice not only leads to poor performance but also premature equipment failure.
Utilising the trailers own reverse light circuits it is possible for us to remove the need for a Suzie cable and still receive a rear view image in the cab.
It negates the need for extra holes and extra wiring and is particularly suited for trailers with sliding bodies or difficult access
Suzie Systems.
An extra socket for the camera connection is used alongside the standard Suzie connectors the camera connection is clearly identifiable and because of its design cannot be incorrectly fitted.
Extremely tough and durable it will last for years.
Rigid Trucks and Draw Bar Trailers
Standard box type rigid trucks are usually fitted with a rear high mounted camera. The high camera mount is best because it allows the driver to view the tail end of the truck during a reverse manoeuvre ensuring that no rear end damage is caused either to himself or somebody else. This can significantly reduce rear end damage cost and third party insurance claims.
Flat bed rigid units and tipper trucks cannot always have a high mounted camera and the lower position does negate some of the benefits but because we only supply cameras that are made for the purpose of reversing safely the cameras have a wide angle view so although you cannot “see” your truck you can view the area that you are reversing into. Flat bed units also really benefit from having a camera mounted to the roof of the cab, allowing the load and your surrounding road space to be observed. Useful for carrying irregular shaped loads or just for the piece of mind that the truck operator knows exactly what is happening on the load area when travelling.
We have supplied and fitted cameras to the inside of a lorry so the internal load can be monitored and because most of our cameras have an audio function anyone hitching an unwanted ride could be detected, talking amongst themselves when they think its safe to do so?
Side view cameras are also a good proposition because it fills in the blind spot (EEC DIRECTIVE 2003/97/EC) and helps to make the driver aware of any vehicle or person undertaking on the near side. you can also use as a side scan system or the new range of Dobli mirrors.
Tipping trucks that carry dense loads and often “tip” on the move i.e.: asphalt, can be fitted with cameras that observe the load area, allowing the operator to monitor how fast he is discharging the load and also preventing the potentially dangerous situation caused by a load sticking to the bulkhead and causing a tip over hazard.
Rigid trucks that also have a draw bar fitted are able to take any guesswork out of hitching up, at any angle and we can supply a suzie cable to connect the trailer and automatically switch to the rear view of the trailer allowing the operator to view what's happening when the potential for disaster is greatly increased.
All of our camera cables are armoured throughout and are easily identifiable with our LTID tags. Extreme service polymer armour makes these the best camera cable on the market and are only available from us. The armour shield makes for easy installation and fully protects the delicate nature of a high frequency cable. Even the smallest scrape or cut in these cables will result in water ingress due to the capillary action of fluids, at best you would need a new cable, worse still the resulting “short” could destroy the monitor or camera.
Rotating, magnetic, led, strobe, xenon, single bolt, 12v,3 bolt, 24v the choice is incredible.
Some sites will demand your machine ceases work if the amber beacon has failed but for our fleet customers we always try for a solution so for once, one size fits all!
But we can help you choose which, and what will give the best life expectancy, are your machines working at the airport? do they need to be fixed? dual voltage? or single?
We have the answers to any questions and can supply and fit from the switch to the orange, red, green and blue flash!
We manufacture our camera boxes from solid steel, then shot blast, zinc plate and finish in a unique plastic rubber coating.
These boxes protect the camera from the elements helping it to stay clean and offer excellent shielding from your trucks working environment.
we also have a range of vehicle specific brackets and (ROPS) clamps.
We supply and have installed camera systems to some of the largest machines in the country. The camera is supposed to give a clearer idea to the operator of what is happening in his working environment and fill in the large blind spot immediately behind the machine. Many cameras we see mounted to the rear are simply in the wrong place and whilst they may allow the driver to see way off in the distance they completely miss the area around the rear of the machine and this poses a far greater threat simply because you can crush anything you cannot see.
PROTECTIVE BAR
We manufacture a solid steel protective bar that bolts around the camera, usually mounted to a box type unit that protects the camera when the truck reverses against a loading bay, commonly found in a warehousing situation. The bar stops the camera being squashed and ultimately destroyed as the truck rests against the buffers during loading. A cheaper alternative to a solid box but an effective solution against costly damage to an expensive camera system.
WE SUPPLY AND INSTALL MOBILE TELEPHONE EQUIPMENT AND CB TYPE RADIOS TO ALL TYPES OF PLANT , AGRICULTURAL AND TRANSPORT.
COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT IS OFTEN VERY POORLY FITTED AND CAN CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS THAN THEY SOLVE.
WE HAVE CHOSEN SOME SPECIFIC MODEL RANGES TO HELP YOU GET THE JOB DONE. DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF VEHICLE AND THE OPERATING CONDITIONS WE CAN ADVISE YOU TO THE BEST SOLUTION.
WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHONE AVAILABLE A BLUETOOTH SYSTEM, EITHER AN EARPIECE OR A PERMANENT BLUETOOTH NETWORK IS OFTEN A GOOD SOLUTION BECAUSE ANYONE CAN USE IT, BUT THEY DO NOT OFFER AS MANY FEATURES AS WITH THE CRADLE TYPE, SUCH AS RECHARGING YOUR PHONE OR AERIAL PERFORMANCE.
CB RADIOS ARE EXCELLENT FOR SMALL GROUPS OF VEHICLES OPERATING CLOSELY WITH EACH OTHER BECAUSE THEY ALLOW EXCELLENT CONVERSATION WITHOUT THE NEED TO LEAVE THE CAB AND THE LESS PEOPLE “WANDER” AROUND SITES AND MACHINERY THE SAFER THEY WILL BE.
Standard operating lamps as fitted by quality manufacturers are not so easy to come by, with any amount of cheap alternatives available. Poorer units give less light output, more power consumption and a higher consumption of bulbs, always failing when you need it most. We install and repair lighting systems for machines to include switched step lights, gangway illumination and greater light coverage for the machines operating environment. We can even supply new relay boards, looms and switches for older machines when the original systems have failed completely.
Good lighting is the key to operating safely 24 hrs. a day 365 days a year, you cannot perform well if you cannot see.
High Intensity Discharge Xenon or HID lights are four times brighter than ordinary halogen lights a “white” light, similar to daylight. Making them much easier on the eye and causing less strain. A Xenon tube lasts 10 times longer than a halogen bulb and use far less power
Monitors and Brackets
At Back Safely we hate drilling holes in expensive dashboards and manufacture specific brackets. Primarily this enables us to place the monitor in the optimum driving position and gives a monitor mount which is strong and durable. It also means that your trucks are not peppered with holes which ultimately destroys its resale value.
Our range of mirrors are specifically manufactured to put up with years of abuse in a construction environment. Used in conjunction with the standard mirror or as a standalone unit they provide unrivalled views of the sides of the machine and its environment, allowing an operator to spot an approaching truck or person long before they get into trouble. One of the key differences between these mirrors and many others on the market is the view is of the surroundings, rather than most, which just stare back at the operator, good for doing your hair and make up but bad for others health!
They are small and unobtrusive so they have the best chance of survival rather than being knocked off at the first opportunity.
Our counterweight mirror is the strongest on the market and features a one piece solid design that has “zero swing” capabilities and actually looks at the ground rather than the sky!
Reverse Alarms
We have a comprehensive range of reverse and travel alarms for every situation. The celebrated BBS TEK white noise broadband sound and more conventional narrow sound.
Having been involved in white noise alarms since their arrival in the UK we can offer strong, sensible advice as to their use and required sound levels, unlike some others we wont mention.
Our own installs always use Deutsch fittings to connect them and we can also supply them direct so your own fitments will be as good as the standard fit that we carry out. Poor connections will lead to poor performance and ultimately failure remember, unseen and unnoticed moisture will begin to travel inside the cable and damage the component from the inside out if the join is bad!
Soldered or sealed joints are permanent and the ability to unplug a reverse alarm is a must during, transmission testing etc.
CONCLUSION.
Health and safety could be a constant burden to many and we strive to make it an easier subject to deal with. Machines are more complicated than ever and accessories that do not work in harmony with the existing system will only come to grief.
